With the launch of the new MEORGA MSR specialist trade fair in the Spanish province of Tarragona, exhibitors gain a valuable opportunity to efficiently reach key target groups and strategically expand their market presence.

Below, you will find comprehensive information on the regional location benefits.

Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry

The “ChemMed Cluster” in Tarragona—the largest chemical cluster in Southern Europe—offers outstanding market opportunities and cooperation potential for exhibitors.

It is the largest chemical park in Southern Europe and the third-largest in Europe overall, covering more than 1,200 hectares. Over 30 chemical companies operate on-site, forming a classic value chain with specialties in petrochemicals, polyolefins, plastics, organic chemistry, industrial products, and both specialty and fine chemicals.

The cluster provides 35,000 direct jobs and supports an annual production volume of approximately 20 million tons. Major global players such as BASF, Dow, Covestro, Clariant, Repsol, and Messer are actively involved in the region.

The complex, highly automated processes make the cluster an ideal environment for MSR solutions in process control, energy and media management, safety technology (e.g., gas detection systems, fire protection), predictive maintenance, and more.

While pharmaceutical production does not have the same prominence in the ChemMed Cluster as petrochemicals, there are still relevant pharmaceutical activities—particularly in the areas of specialty chemicals, research, and technical services.

As a result, the region offers attractive niche markets for providers of MSR technology and process automation—especially in the fields of GMP-compliant automation, cleanroom technology, and digital process integration.

Hydrogen
Tarragona is a key location for green hydrogen production in Southern Europe. The driving forces behind the project "Green Hydrogen in the Tarragona Chemical Cluster" are the companies Repsol, Enagás, Iqoxe, and Messer. 150 MW of electrolysis capacity, commissioning in 2025, target capacity of 1 GW by 2027. Additional new production sites for green hydrogen are planned in La Pobla de Mafumet and Ascó. Export logistics, tank infrastructure, ship supply, and truck refueling stations are being developed at the Port of Tarragona. All of this is part of the Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia.

The Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia is a regional hydrogen initiative aiming to establish Catalonia – especially the Tarragona region – as a leading center for green hydrogen in Southern Europe. It is a multi-stakeholder project that brings together industry, research, public authorities, and infrastructure operators.

Targets by 2030: 4 GW of electrolysis capacity, €8.9 billion in investments, 2,300 new jobs in the hydrogen sector.

The Hydrogen Valley thus offers a highly dynamic environment for exhibitors in areas such as electrolysis process control, gas quality sensors, safety and leakage monitoring, energy and load management, SCADA integration, and remote monitoring.

Water/Wastewater

The situation for providers of MSR technology/automation solutions in the water/wastewater sector within the ChemMed Cluster Tarragona is promising and future-oriented. The operator Aqualia, one of Europe’s leading water infrastructure providers, is currently building a joint wastewater treatment plant for around 30 chemical companies in this industrial area. Capacity: 1.8 million liters per hour, 24/7 operation. 44 km industrial water network, 14 km chlorinated water network, world-leading water treatment plant for reuse, with a capacity of 19 Hm³/year. The plant also produces demineralized water with 0.2 µS.

The facility is technically highly complex, as it treats heterogeneous industrial wastewater from various processes (e.g., petrochemicals, polymers, specialty chemicals) and requires the integration of intelligent sensor technology, modular automation systems, remote monitoring and predictive maintenance, and cybersecurity solutions for critical infrastructure.

Many sales opportunities exist for MEORGA exhibitors/partners, as MSR technology is essential for flow, pressure, and level measurement, pH, conductivity, and TOC monitoring, automated control of pumps, aeration, dosing, regulation of cleaning cycles, and return systems, among others.

In addition, the city of La Bisbal del Penedès (Province of Tarragona) has awarded the water and wastewater services to the operator Aqualia – one of Spain's leading water infrastructure companies. Aqualia is increasingly focusing on digital solutions and sustainable water management. In many municipalities, smart meters, IoT sensor technology, and energy-efficient control systems are being introduced.

The Tarragona region therefore offers exhibitors focusing on the water/wastewater sector large-scale projects with long-term investment horizons, technically demanding applications, opportunities for cooperation with Aqualia, AITASA, and industry partners, and a growing market potential driven by sustainability and digitalization pressure.

Automotive Industry

MSR technology plays a central role in automotive production and offers numerous advantages along the entire value chain. Precise measurement systems monitor critical manufacturing parameters (e.g., temperature, pressure, position), and control loops ensure consistent production conditions – essential for processes such as painting or welding. MSR technology is the backbone of modern automated automotive production lines in the immediate vicinity of the new trade fair location.

The proximity of “firaReus” to automotive production in Catalonia is also strategically advantageous and offers numerous points of connection. Vehicle manufacturing, with production sites in Barcelona (SEAT/CUPRA), Martorell (Spain’s largest car plant), and Zona Franca (formerly Nissan, now used by several start-ups and suppliers), is one of the four most important industrial sectors in Catalonia, with more than 500 companies.

Food & Beverage

Hygienically flawless process control (e.g., CIP/SIP), precise temperature and humidity regulation in production lines, as well as reliable recipe control and batch processing, are among the most relevant MSR solutions for the food and beverage industry in the region.

Leading companies – including some of the world's largest producers and market leaders such as DAMM, Freixenet, Nestlé, and Casa Tarradellas – operate major production facilities in Catalonia, making them a particularly attractive target group for exhibitors.

Building Automation

Barcelona is considered a European model for Smart Cities. This orientation has a direct impact on the use of MSR technology, particularly in the areas of building automation, energy efficiency, and urban infrastructure. Whether in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) or lighting and access control systems, MSR technology ensures that modern buildings are operated energy-efficiently, comfortably, safely, and economically through intelligent control strategies.

Transport and Infrastructure

The Port of Tarragona is one of the most important seaports in the western Mediterranean and offers a wide range of performance features. A multifunctional port with terminals for liquid goods (chemicals, oil), bulk goods (grain, coal, fertilizers), containers, and general cargo.

In the local Smart Port initiatives for the digitalization of cargo handling, energy, and environmental monitoring with a focus on energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and automated control systems, MSR technology and automation play a central role and are an integral part of port modernization.

For our exhibitors, the port infrastructure offers enormous sales potential for MSR applications in the areas of energy supply (load management, grid monitoring, electricity and water meters, leakage detection), ship-to-shore systems (automated shore power connections, safety shutdowns, pressure regulation), crane and cargo handling technology (position sensing, load control, drive control, safety monitoring), traffic & access control (barriers, traffic lights, access control, vehicle recognition), environmental monitoring (air and water quality, noise, emissions, oil separator control), buildings & facilities (HVAC control, lighting, access control, fire protection systems)
